METAMORPHOSIS
Material Research
2023
This project focused on reshaping plastic sheets with a heatpress and air pressure gun, creating organic forms reminiscent of nature's unpredictability. We were inspired by the art of glass blowing but adapted it to our resources. The plastic, once rigid, surrendered to the heat and air, yielding fascinating, unpredictable shapes. It was a process where intervention was challenging, but this unpredictability added to the charm.
By breathing life into recycled plastic sheets and discarded granulate, we showcased plastic's diversity and potential for artistry and design. The final results, with their fluid, organic shapes, served as a poignant reminder of nature's own spontaneity. The plastic seemed to come alive, designing itself in part, guided by its unique properties and how it responded to the process. In essence, our project was a creative collaboration between human ingenuity and the material itself, capturing the essence of nature's beauty through plastic metamorphosis.
This research is part of an exhibition of the class of Product Design 2024, at the 2023 Dutch Design Week.
